Being prepared for your surgery is one of the best ways to ensure your entire experience is a positive one. Please review the pre-operative instructions days prior to your appointment to assure you are well prepared:
PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS for ALL PATIENTS:
- Any patient under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent at the time of surgery.
- Please wear loose fitting short sleeve shirt and comfortable clothing
- Please remove contact lenses, all jewelry, and watches before surgery
- Please do not apply make-up, perfume, or cologne on the day of surgery.
- Gauze sponges will be provided but it will be beneficial to have additional available; as well as ice packs available at home after surgery to reduce bleeding and swelling.
- Please have Advil, Motrin, or Ibuprofen/Tylenol available for after surgery. To be taken alternately with any prescribed pain medications.
(PLEASE NOTE: Your prescribed pain medication – Norco/Hydrocodone/ APAP- typically has Tylenol/Ibuprofen included. The second higher number on the bottle is the Tylenol/Ibuprofen dosing. Therefore, use caution when taking Tylenol/Ibuprofen and your prescribed medication. The maximum daily dose of Tylenol/Ibuprofen must not exceed 4000mg in a 24-hour period. You must account for the Tylenol/Ibuprofen dosing in your prescribed medication into this daily total.)
- Alcoholic beverages need to be avoided 24 hours before and 7 days after surgery.
- Smoking must be avoided 24 hours before surgery and 10 days after surgery to help minimize the post-operative pain and healing problems like dry sockets.
- If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach, or bowel upset, please notify the office as soon as possible. This could affect your surgery and recovery.
- If you take routine oral medications, please check with our office prior to your surgical date for instructions. Some may need to be stopped. Some may need to be taken.
- If you think you might be pregnant, please inform our office before your appointment. We will need to consult with your Obstetrician before we can proceed with any sedation or prescribed medications.
- If you are breastfeeding, please let us know so we can discuss ways to help you manage this and your post-operative medications.
- If you are on birth control, please inform your surgical technician if not already listed on your health history forms as the antibiotics, we prescribe can have a deterring affect to their effectiveness.
- We request that patients maintain normal oral care and brush their teeth on the day of surgery.
PATIENTS HAVING IV SEDATION:
- DO NOT EAT OR DRINK 6 HOURS PRIOR TO SURGERY: This includes water. This is a required precaution for aspiration under anesthesia.
- (PLEASE NOTE: If you have been prescribed medication at consultation, or by a primary care doctor as a pre-operative need, please take as directed prior to appointment. You may take this with no more than a few sips of water. If you forget to take any pre-operative medications prior to your surgery, you must let the front desk know upon arrival to have an alternative option and adjust appointment times)
- Please arrange for a ride to and from the office on the day of your surgery. Patients will not be able to drive home after surgery or operate machinery. PLEASE INFORM YOUR DRIVER THAT HE/SHE WILL NEED TO STAY IN THE RECEPTION ROOM DURING THE ENTIRE SURGERY. We suggest the driver bring some reading material. Also please park on the North side of the building for ramp access for departure.
- Please have a responsible adult at home to care for you on the day of surgery.
- All prescribed medications will be printed and provided on site post-surgery. These can be filled at any local pharmacy. Due to the pain medications often prescribed we are not able to call in prescriptions they will need to be filled in person.
OTHER FRIENDLY REMINDERS:
- If you have not already completed your patient health history form, please do so prior to your appointment. You can find these on our website under the “Patient Forms” tab in the upper right-hand corner. If for any reason you are not able to access these digital forms, please arrive at least 15 minutes early for your appointment to have these filled out in our office.
- We reserve the right to cancel or postpone surgery if any of the instructions are not followed.
- Emergency cases will always take precedence over non-emergent appointments, our office will do our best to inform patients of any schedule changes upon the notice to our office of emergency needs. We will do our very best to keep patients as close to the scheduled times as possible.
AT HOME DINING TIPS:
- Hydration will be the most important part of your recovery. Drinking water is always the best way to hydrate, for alternatives please refrain from sugary drinks.
Consider options like Sugar Free Liquid IV, Sugar Free Body Armor, or Sugar Free Nuun tablets. Feel free to ask our office for recommendations on where to purchase and other in-office purchase options. Adding cucumber to your water is also beneficial for hydration. (NOTE: To make cucumber water, you can refrigerate cucumber in water for 2 to 4 hours. Then, strain the water and discard the cucumber. You can add fresh cucumber slices and ice for serving. The infused water will keep in the fridge for up to 2 days.)
- Prepare to have soft foods at home after surgery like applesauce, pudding, Jell-O, soup, soft bread and butter, broth, yogurt, mashed potatoes, noodles, and watermelon.
- All warm foods should be prepared at a room temperature or cooled prior to eating.
FINANCIAL AGREEMENT REMINDER:
- Payment is due upon check in.
- Please provide copies of any insurance you would like to have a claim generated.

Be sure to talk to Dr. Kline's staff if you currently take medications that contain aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Aleve (naproxen), ibuprofen, or Tylenol (acetaminophen); or are currently on any anticoagulants such as Coumadin, Plavix, Lovenox, and Heparin. Those that are on any medications for bone density will also need to call in (option 4) for additional percautions prior to their procedure.
